Our SPRING SHOW will be a devised piece based on the Odyssey. Each group will prepare 2 pieces. One based on the original challenge Odysseus faced on his journey home from the Trojan War and one based on a modern interpretation of how we face that challenge in our lives today.

The Odyssey itself is very much interested in whether somebody — specifically Odysseus — can be the same person over time and space. Whether the Odysseus that was in Ithaca 20 years before can be the same Odysseus who's back in Ithaca 20 years later.

So I definitely thought about that in relation to my own life, and also in relation to how the poem is figuring in time, and how identity might change when you're in a different place, with different people and you're 20 or 40 years older. Or how you might change during a world wide pandemic. Will you be the same person at the end of this odyssey?

The title also uses the word OPPORTUNITY…

late 14c., opportunitie, "fit, convenient, or seasonable time," from the phrase ob portum veniens "coming toward a port," in reference to the wind, from ob "in front of; toward" (see ob-) + portus "harbor" (see port (n.1)

we have an OPPORTUNITY to do something different this year. I hope you hop on board and tie yourself to the oars. Let’s get rowing…
