Three Beetlejuice Sets...
Not quite HardCore Minimalism here folks… more like HARDCORE OVERLY EXCESSIVELY AWESOME. Wowza, now these are some Broadway worthy sets. The details, the hat tips to Tim Burton, the easter eggs to his other movies, this is over the top amazing set design. I love the tiny stories that are told in the details that no one except the actors and those working up close with the set will ever see, but it helps tell the bigger story and is so whimsical and fun! This wasn’t a show that I wanted to see UNTIL I saw this video, now I am sad that I missed seeing this amazing set in person!
QUESTIONS: What was the most interesting part of the design for this set? What tiny detail amazed you? Would you want to see this show just to see the set design?
The Big Idea of plays as Design Inspiration
These are some evocative designs. I like the idea of a set representing not a PLACE but the BIG IDEA of the play. All of the elements each telling a part of the story through metaphorical images and feelings evoked from the set design itself. So challenging, but so much more interesting than a traditional realistic set.
QUESTIONS: How could a set represent not a place but an idea? What did you find interesting about his designs? How can you design a place based on the FEELINGS that a place creates instead of the VISUAL IMAGES?
HardCore Minimalism as Design
The use of everyday materials in surprising ways is interesting (and cheaper than building full sets. So that is even more exciting of a possibility for our Leon sets.)
QUESTIONS: How did you like the idea of creating sets that change with how the actors use and move them? What is the craziest thing you might design a set with? What play would work with that HARDCORE MINIMALIST set?

QUESTIONS: What has been the most spectacular element of a play that you have seen? How important are special effects when you see a play or musical?
